ClipQuill

About Clipquill

A transcription page that runs on your own machine, and a habit of publishing the numbers behind it — including the unflattering ones.

Why it runs in your browser

Most free transcription tools ask you to upload the file, because recognition is expensive and servers are where the cost lands. Clipquill does the opposite: the model is downloaded to your browser once — 78.4 MiB — and every transcript after that is produced by your own device.

  • No upload. There is no endpoint that receives your file, which is a stronger guarantee than a promise to delete it later.
  • No account, no queue. Nothing to sign up for, nothing waiting behind someone else's job.
  • The trade you accept. Your machine does the work, so the first run pays for the download and long files are slower than on a server farm. The hard caps are 30 minutes of audio and 512 MiB per file.

Why the numbers here look the way they do

Almost every transcription page quotes an accuracy percentage. We scanned 30 pages from the tools people compare, and 0 of them state what the percentage was measured on — no test set, no conditions, no reference transcript. A number without conditions cannot be checked, and it usually cannot be reproduced either.

  • What we publish instead. On the audio most people actually have — clean or light-noise real speech, 85 reference words — the English default (Moonshine base) is 7.1% wrong and the optional small tier 8.2%. Across all eight fixed clips (including deliberately harsh telephone-band and heavy-noise stress clips) it is 13.5% wrong overall, split by condition from 6.1% on clean synthetic speech to 21.3% on real speech with heavy background noise.
  • Why that spread matters. The gap between acoustic conditions is wider than the gap between two tools measured on one condition. Compare on the audio you actually have.
  • Check it yourself. Raw model output and the scoring scripts are public, so you can re-score, disagree, and read the errors listed rather than summarised into a percentage.
  • And what we have not measured, we say we have not measured. Several questions on this site are answered with “no figure” rather than with a guess.

Who makes this

Clipquill is made by a small team. There is no sales department and no account manager; this is a tool plus the measurements that come with it. The site carries advertising and some affiliate links, which is how the hosting is paid for — that is stated in the footer and in the privacy policy rather than buried.
